A big thank you to the team for making my first descent down Spean Gorge both memorable and safe one.
I’ll admit, I was a wee bit apprehensive after reading various river guidebooks, social media posts, and forums that all hinted at how challenging this water could and would be.
However, by observing and learning from some top whitewater SUP paddlers, as well as nailing my swimming skills (which I definitely, definitely needed!), I gained invaluable knowledge.
One of the aspects I love most about SUP is the endless opportunity for growth. There are always new challenges to step up to, skills to hone, and inspiration to be found…..thank you guys, especially louise.royle.paddler and jessphip

This past Aug/Sept I returned to East Greenland and the village of Kulusuk.
In Sept, wildsidelandscapedesigns arrived and we did a multi day Stand Up Paddle Expedition. Due to the remote nature, We both experienced the deepest feeling of wildness in our years of adventure travel.

Gear is the reason you can paddle in cold weather. While it can be an investment, it’s essential for safety and comfort. I prefer a drysuit for its versatility as it allows for layering and keeps you dry. Don’t forget neoprene gloves, boots, a foam vest PFD, and a warm hat!
🧭 Plan Ahead:
Cold-weather paddling requires more preparation. Icy conditions can complicate everything from packing to launching, so leave extra time for set-up, always check your gear before heading out, and head out with a pal or tell someone your plan.
📋 Risk Management:
This isn’t the season for beginners. Winter paddling comes with increased risks, so preparing for all situations is crucial. Always paddle within your limits and have a safety plan in place.
💧Know Your Waters:
Open water can be hard to find in winter. Large lakes or windy areas are more likely to stay ice-free, but those conditions can also make paddling tricky.
⏰ Be Patient and Flexible:
Winter paddling requires waiting for the right moment. A calm, clear day is a rarity, but it’s worth it. Keep in mind, that your outing might be short; even 30 minutes can be an adventure.

“There are old climbers and bold climbers, but no old bold climbers”

I was drawn to the overhanging prow on the right. Imagine climbing up that, the underside of the prow. Deep water iceberg soloing, but like proper climbing DWS style where the chance of falling is potentially higher than getting to the top.
.
This idea took me back to some of the first days DWS in Mallorca with neil.gresham, Klem Loskott and all the others who were there too. Wondering what it would be like to launch a dyno 40ft above the water on what turned out to be “Loscott and two Smoking Barrels” F8a+. In those days nobody had ever done that before so we didn’t know what was going happen.

I had similar thoughts looking at this iceberg. As far as I knew no one had ever tried to climb anything like this before. I was excited by the prospect, but this was fundamentally different. This was not rock but ice, constantly moving and changing, and sometimes breaking.
.
Surely it was so large it would stay intact. Maybe I’d get pumped and fall leaving a tool as a memoir lodged into the berg.
.
My gut was luring me on, like any pioneer, to go for it and find out. Processing all the things that might happen and my plan if it does?
The one thought that stopped me in my tracks was this one.
“What happens if a large block of ice you’re climbing on detaches from the berg. We’re both in the air, I hit the water first and slow down then the ice lands in top of me. “

“Let’s get out of here Tim” I thought. It was just before midnight and time to go to bed! Fortunately we had an early flight the next day so I wouldn’t get another chance to rethink my options! 😉
.

Trying not to get emotional 😭 so unbelievably stoked to be here and heading back up north! Home here I come! 20,000 miles down, 7,000 more to go!!
Step one of this adventure was to get to Lake Louise in time for sunrise. Step two involved convincing myself that getting into my raft and paddling to the end of the lake would be a fun and hopefully comfortable experience! All the paddling along with layering my eddiebauer down onesie under my dry suit made for a pretty cosy adventure indeed, even at -10°C! If you’ve got your own set up and want to paddle in Canmore one day after a fresh snowfall message me - it’s something I’ve always wanted to do!

Photo 6 was basically me turning back going there's a flippin seal 🤣 Unfortunately the light started to fade as I went in late afternoon till dusk but teylaaa got a pic of me and the seal and braved the cold for some pics.
I decided to wear my drysuit instead of a wetsuit which isn't usual for surfing typically. As I'm sup surfing and it wasn't on a big hectic day, I spent more time on my board than in the water and the drysuit helped the wind chill massively after a dunking and getting back on the board. mustangsurvival

By Sup- exploring the fjords and islands around Qeertartivatisaq, with the final daunting crossing of the Sermilik Fjord.
Navigating giant icebergs, the path often appearing impassible. Absolutely the most incredible feeling passing through this landscape.
The Sup offered just that little bit of extra advantage to choose the safest route.

Winter paddling is definitely now in full swing! It's not all bad though I love crisp mornings when the weather behaves.
I will be using my drysuit with layers underneath as we get deeper into winter and then wearing a 5/4 winter wetsuit for when I'm out surfing. Winter paddling is brilliant but always go under the assumption you could end up in the water and wear the appropriate gear be that a winter wetsuit, drysuit or numerous different layers with splash top! Top tip in winter take a drybag and pack a warm layer, quickdry towel and a wooly hat in the bag.

Been out on the water so much the past month. Been so good to go personally paddling it's something that you don't always get to do as much as you'd like as an instructor.
Something else that happened this month is I've become a UK ambassador for mustangsurvival .With the weather changing so often I've been wearing my drysuit far more than I should of been, I've also been taking my Callan Waterproof everywhere just incase it decides to rain which has come in clutch.
Mustang Survival are a Canadian company that has been making water safety gear for over 50 years. Gear goes through rigorous testing at the HQ within the country. About 2 years ago they entered the UK market and brought this exceptional quality with them.
As it goes into Autumn I will be getting out on the water lots more and in winter I will be hopefully taking some more watersports courses so will be testing and having to rely on my kit even more as the cold sets in.
Will showcase more individually in the future but these are just a few photos from my adventures with teylaaa over the past month.

The first sea to table harvest of the year was a nice little winter variety of dungeness crab, red rock crab, and rock crab! Crabs weren’t the only harvest that day and I’m proud to say we successfully completed a full mission and a half… minus lunch on the beach, unfortunately! Broughton Archipelago Expedition - I couldn’t have asked for two better trips to this incredible area and traditional land of the Kwak’wakawakw. With fully loaded boards and inspiration from past clients to set up an expedition here, we had two 4 night 5 day experiences and it was more than I could ask for. Spectacular weather, two amazing groups to spend time with on the water, ancient village and harvesting sites, and lots of whales and wildlife. Really can’t wait to get back here for 2022. Big thanks to captwillson for the shuttles and to alanakai8 and brucekirkby for the support.
